Resident Engineer
Primary on-site technical contact for U.S. OEM customers, including GM and Stellantis, providing engineering support, issue resolution, and programme alignment.
Job Description:
The Automotive Resident Engineer is the primary on‑site technical representative connecting the company’s engineering teams with U.S. OEM customers, primarily GM and Stellantis. Based at customer engineering and manufacturing sites, this role owns customer‑reported issues for assigned electronic control modules and embedded software, ensuring thorough investigation and timely resolution.
This position requires strong technical judgment, independence, and the ability to operate effectively in fast‑paced, high‑visibility environments. The Resident Engineer represents customer needs internally while also communicating company priorities and constraints professionally and accurately.
The Role:
Serve as the day‑to‑day technical interface with OEM engineering, validation, quality, and manufacturing teams.
Manage customer‑reported issues from identification through root cause analysis, corrective action, and closure.
Communicate customer requirements, timing changes, risks, and expectations to internal teams.
Participate in customer program meetings, design reviews, quality reviews, launch events, and build activities.
Balance customer expectations with realistic technical and timing constraints.
Provide on‑site support for electronic control modules and embedded software throughout development, launch, and production.
Support software update deployment, validation, flashing, configuration control, and version management.
Diagnose system‑level hardware and software issues using logs, traces, diagnostics, and vehicle or bench testing.
Collect and analyze data, collaborating with internal software and hardware teams to drive timely resolutions.
Respond quickly to OEM quality concerns, coordinating containment, investigation, corrective actions, and communication.
Support warranty, field return, and production quality issues for electronic modules.
Lead or contribute to structured problem‑solving efforts, including 8D reports and customer deliverables.
Provide on‑site support during prototype builds, pilot events, launch activities, and early production.
Monitor end‑of‑line testing and early production for emerging issues or escalation risks.
Maintain a consistent on‑site presence, building strong relationships with OEM engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams.
Provide clear, concise status updates on issues, risks, and customer feedback.
Support engineering change management activities, including ECNs, implementation timing, and configuration tracking.
Operate effectively in a dynamic, interruption‑driven environment with minimal supervision.
Consider the health and safety, environmental and energy impact of all activities.
Support the Company’s compliance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018 by following company policy and best practice.
Candidate Profile:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, or related engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).
Minimum 3 years of automotive engineering experience, ideally with embedded electronic modules or software‑driven systems.
Strong understanding of automotive communication protocols (CAN, LIN, Ethernet) and diagnostic tools.
Experience with embedded software behavior, ECU flashing, validation, or system‑level troubleshooting.
Proven ability to independently diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to work professionally with OEM personnel.
Ability to work on‑site and support irregular hours during launches or build events; occasional U.S. travel for track events.
Desirable
Experience with GM and/or Stellantis engineering processes.
Familiarity with software configuration management, version control, and release workflows.
Knowledge of automotive quality tools (8D, DFMEA, PFMEA, control plans).
Understanding of automotive manufacturing processes and plant operations.
Experience with DevOps or similar issue‑tracking systems.
